Durkee Brown Viverios & Werenfels

Firm Profile

Durkee, Brown, Viveiros & Werenfels Architects (DBVW) is an award-winning full-service architectural firm located in Providence, Rhode Island. Smart growth principles and sustainability are core values at DBVW. We believe in building strong, livable communities that promote economic growth and preserve cultural and natural resources. We design inspiring and engaging places for people to live, work and play.

DBVW’s staff of 30 people includes 12 registered architects and 11 LEED Accredited Professionals. Among our team you will find people who enjoy furthering clients’ missions while contributing insight, creativity and technical rigor throughout the duration of the project. People know us for our eagerness to listen, to laugh, to get our hands dirty, and to put our noses to the grindstone. It is not uncommon to find us surveying at the top of scaffolding or measuring in a crawl space, because our approach to design integrates technical knowledge, tactile experience, innovative ideas and clarity of concept.

DBVW’s portfolio includes commercial, institutional and residential design. One of our areas of specialization is the preservation and adaptive reuse of historic buildings. We have completed over one hundred historic preservation projects involving buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and have assembled a staff that brings considerable experience delivering:

– Landmark Quality Restoration Services
– Condition Assessments and Feasibility Studies
– Phasing Recommendations with Cost Estimation
– Sustainable Design for Historic and Older Buildings
– Federal and State Historic Tax Credit Applications
– Interior Design within Historic and Older Buildings

DBVW’s expertise with the adaptive reuse of historic buildings has brought us considerable attention and respect from our building industry colleagues and peers. This is how we built the foundation of our business, but our capabilities don’t stop there. We are as adept at new construction as we are with historic preservation. Regardless of the building type, we apply our knowledge of technical, business, design and social trends with the programmatic requirements of our clients.

Since the firm’s founding in 1994, DBVW has understood that investing in creativity is a business decision for our clients. From the start, we help clients make informed decisions at a comfortable pace by communicating as simply, clearly and effectively as the buildings we design. We’ve managed a variety of complex commercial and institutional project types and are at ease with economic and technical constraints. We have terrific clients and our goal is to make them enjoy both the process and the end result.
